I

INCANDESCENT LIGHTS – Lights that emit high levels of red and infrared energy.

INDETERMINATE – A plant growth habit in which stems keep growing in length indefinitely. For example, indeterminate tomatoes are tall, late-fruiting, and require staking for improved yield.

INDOLEBUTYRIC ACID (IBA) – A synthetic auxin with commercial use.

INERT INGREDIENTS – Inactive components of a pesticide formulation that are used to dilute the pesticide or to make it safer, more effective, easier to measure, mix, and apply, and more convenient to handle.

INJECTOR – See proportioner.

INORGANIC CHEMICALS – Chemicals that are not made from chains or rings of carbon atoms—for example, soil clay minerals, nitrate, and calcium.

INSECTICIDAL SOAP – A specially formulated soap that is only minimally damaging to plants, but kills insects. Usually works by causing an insect’s outer shell to crack, resulting in its interior organs drying out.

INSTAR – The stage of an insect’s life between molts.

IRRIGATION – The application of water to soil to provide better moisture conditions for crop growth. Micro-irrigation, including drip, trickle, and micro-sprinkler irrigation, refers to a set of practices that apply localized irrigation water at low rates through small tubes and emitters and are generally water conserving.
