Vertical Container Technique
Vertical container systems produce crops in upright or vertical rows, a method that can significantly increase plant populations. The most common vertical systems include stacked pots (See Figure 14.15), and sloped PVC pipes (See Figure 14.16). The most widely used vertical system design uses polystyrene pots manufactured specifi¬cally for vertical systems that interlock and stack on top of each other. These pots are filled with a soilless medium such as coconut coir, perlite, composted pine bark, or coarse vermiculite. Many of these media have been used success¬fully alone or in mixes. The nutrient solution is delivered into the top pot and flows from the top pot through each subsequent pot through drainage holes until it has been delivered to all pots in the vertical stack.
