Hydroponic Systems
Aeroponic System
In the aeroponic system, nutrient solution is intermittently sprayed onto the roots of plants that otherwise hang in the air (See Figure 14.5). The A-frame aeroponic system is constructed of polystyrene board sides supported by a frame above a nutrient reservoir. The plants are inserted into the holes of the polystyrene sides and secured using polyurethane foam with their roots suspended on the inside of the A-frame. The box is sealed so that the roots are in darkness (to inhibit algal growth) and to maintain humidity. The roots of the plants get good oxygen from the spray of solution and from the volume of air within the chamber. Water and nutrients are supplied by spraying the plant’s dangling roots with an atomized nutrient solution by means of sprayers, misters, or foggers inserted in PE or PVC pipes placed in the unit.
